History of Positano

History of Positano The origins of Positano as those of so many other cities, lost in the night of  times, history and legenda are confused in the myth that Positano was founded by Neptune, the God of the sea, for love of the nymph Pasitea from him beloved.

Certainly the Phoenicians and the Greeks, in their trips towards west then set foot in this region inhabitated by Oschi or Piceni. The Romans built near the Great beach a rich Patrician Villa, now buried from the gardens and from the Church of the Assunta.

The emperor Tiberio transferred to Capri because in Rome he was hated and he didn't trust anybody, he was afraid that everyone wanted to poison him, he didn't want bread made, then his Trireme pushed him along the coasts up to Positano and here they took the flour from a mill that it is still standing and that up to a little while ago was working (Plaza Of the Mills).

Positano in the sec. IX, X, XI belonged to the Republic of Amalfi. The sec. X was one of the most important commercial centers, in competition even with Venice.

Not having a port, its ships were thrown to hand by the population.

Around 1530 the whole coastline was invaded by the plague, mortality was elevated, above all in Positano, Conca, Ravello, Scala. To these evil famines were added, brigands that continually came down from the mountains, ransacking the towns, for which the viceroy Pietro of Toledo ordered that every city or town should have built some towers from which to defend themselves from possible dangers coming from the sea. Positano built quite a lot of them, but the most important were: that of the SPONDA, that of the TRASITA, the third tower named FORNILLO.

The Turks kept on making razzie in fact the Solimano 2°, the Turkish emperor reached our gulf with 150 ships, he ransacked and burned down so many cities among which was Positano.

Positano during that time faled many problems caused by the Turks, the Brigands and by bad administration by the Ministers and Barons it.

In 1668 Positano paid 12.943 dukedoms to redeem itself from the feudal weight and declared itself "regal city", it opened therefore its commerce with Greece, with the island of Cyprus, it reactivated that with Puglia and with Calabria, so much as to become superior to the other countries that there were then on the market.

The boats Positanesi, Galeotte, Feluche, Poles arrived anywhere; trafficking with the neighbor Middle East. They brought spices thirsts and so sought after precious wood from the west. It was then that the magnificent Baroque houses were built, that rise against the mountain. A century ago a play got depressed on Positano: the vapors began to face the ocean; Positano not being able itself to put in competition with them began to decay.

At that time the country counted ottomila inhabitants. In the decade between 1860 and 1870, around 6000 people emigrated to America, the houses were empty, the walls crumbled, the paintings discolored , the roofs fell in.

Positano is a big tourist centrer: tourism is the principal resource of the country.
